Hands up for Housing

Hands up for Housing

Australia’s Housing System Is Broken.

House prices are out of control, rents are rising, and public housing waitlists are growing fast.

It’s getting harder and harder for everyday Australians to find a secure, affordable place to live.

Our tax system is rigged in favour of wealthy property investors—and it’s making the crisis worse.

Right now, two tax concessions, negative gearing and the capital gains tax (CGT) discount, are pushing prices up and locking people out.

Here’s how:

  • Negative gearing lets investors claim rental losses as tax deductions against their personal income.
  • The CGT discount gives them a 50% tax break when they their investment property sell at a profit.

These policies were meant to boost housing supply—but they haven’t. In fact, 93% of negatively geared purchases are existing homes, not new builds. That means investors are competing directly with first home buyers, driving prices higher.

The result?
Unaffordable housing and tax concessions costing us more than $10 billion last year, with most of it going to the top 10 percent of income earners.

We believe this is unfair. These are handouts for the people who need them the least.

That’s why we’ve launched Hands up for Housing, calling on the federal government to:

  1. End negative gearing for existing homes
  2. Scrap the CGT discount on property
  3. Reinvest the savings into building more public and affordable housing

It’s time to fix this system so that it works for all of us, not just the wealthy few.

Looking for suggestions?

  • Be authentic - Speak about the issue as it relates to you. Are you saving for a house, but prices keep going up? Are you putting off life decisions because you cannot afford your own home? Do you believe its unfair that so much money is provided in tax subsidies to the wealthy, while the waitlist for public housing grows? Share this with your MP - the personal is more persuasive than facts and figures (even though they matter!)

  • Be respectful - No one - including Members of Parliament - changes their mind because they're being shouted down. You're wanting to be counted in favour of this reform, and you want them to see the merits of your argument.

  • Don't be partisan - We all have a favourite team, but this is about the game. Play the issue, not the party. After all, we're trying to show all of them - regardless of their their party - that their community supports this change.

  • Stick to the key demands - If we're all asking for the same thing (end of negative gearing on pre-existing homes, the removal of the captial gains tax discount on property and more funding for social housing), we're more likely to get our message across. Most importantly, we're looking to show them that when they decide to act on these issues, they've got supporters in the community.

  • Be concise - Short and to the point emails have more impact than the longer, meandering ones.
