Hands up for Housing

Australia’s Housing System Is Broken.

House prices are out of control, rents are rising, and public housing waitlists are growing fast.

It’s getting harder and harder for everyday Australians to find a secure, affordable place to live.

Our tax system is rigged in favour of wealthy property investors—and it’s making the crisis worse.

Right now, two tax concessions—negative gearing and the capital gains tax (CGT) discount—are pushing prices up and locking people out.

Here’s how:

  • Negative gearing lets investors claim rental losses as tax deductions, even if they’re already earning a high income.
  • The CGT discount gives them a 50% tax break when they their investment property sell at a profit.

These policies were meant to boost housing supply—but they haven’t.
In fact, 93% of negatively geared purchases are existing homes, not new builds. That means investors are competing directly with first home buyers and renters, driving prices higher.

The result?
Unaffordable housing and tax concessions costing us more than $10 billion last yearwith most of it going to the top 10 percent of income earners.

We believe this is unfair. These are handouts for the people who need them least.

That’s why we’ve launched Hands up for Housing, calling on the federal government to:

  • End negative gearing for existing homes
  • Scrap the CGT discount on property
  • Reinvest the savings into building more public and affordable housing

It’s time to fix this system—so it works for all of us, not just the wealthy few.
